Walton Juniors play key roles in Cambridge success

Four former Walton juniors played key roles in Cambridge’s clean sweep of all their Boat Races against Oxford this year.

Maddy Jackson (reading Medicine at St Edmunds College) was the President and stroke of the women’s lightweight crew who beat Oxford, to record Maddy’s third successive win in this event.

Gianluca Maffi (reading Engineering at Downing College) was also President of the men’s lightweight crew – the first time in history that men’s and women’s Presidents had both come from the same junior club!  Gianluca rowed in the 2-seat in his Blue Boat and helping to secure their convincing win in a new course record was another Walton junior in the 5-seat, Ben Isherwood (Natural Sciences, Emmanuel College).

Matt Heywood was also selected for the openweight Blue Boat but unfortunately was unable to compete in the main race after an acrimonious eligibility dispute with Oxford.  However, despite this he showed his commitment and loyalty to Cambridge University Boat Club by stroking their crew that won the University prize at the Head of the River Race and by helping to coach the women’s lightweight crew to their win. We are incredibly proud of all of them.  Several will be coming down to the club soon and will be happy to talk to any current juniors who are interested in applying to Cambridge about courses and options.
