Sweltering at Molesey and Nottingham

Two long and hot days at Molesey Regatta for the junior squads. On Saturday a Womens’ junior quad ( Evie, Eleanor, Emma and Sophie) reached the final of open quads, while the junior double (Joe and Cyrus) won their event.

On Sunday there were wins for the WJ15 quad (Hannah, Lucy, Fiona, Izzy H c Myesha), J16 double (Fin and Henry), J15 double (Evan and Denis) and J14 single (Alexei, in his first singles race). Several other crews reached their finals and there were several tight races, none more so than in J16 quads, where the Walton crew was beaten by 3′ (from a free start and with a slightly variable stagger!). Quite a few scullers were racing for the first time, and both boys’ and girls’ J13 crews included J12 girls, so both did extremely well despite losing by margins of a length or two. As usual we sculled the boats down and back through the lock – itself an adventure for many!

Meanwhile Walton crews were also in action at Nottingham for the British Junior Championships. Henry Z and Ben were in a very competitive doubles field where they finished 3rd in the C final. The coxless four of Ciaran, Julius, Richard and Dan got through to the A final and rowed a great race to finish just half a length outside the medals, behind the Home International crews of Wales, England and Scotland.
