Former Walton juniors shine at senior trials

Former juniors from Walton enjoyed great success at last week’s GB Rowing Team open 5k trials at Boston. Morgan Bolding, current World Champion in eights, cemented his claim for a seat in the top GB boat this season with a second place overall in men’s pairs. Matt Heywood, son of masters rower Steve and current U23 World Champion in eights, was arguable even more impressive: he came 5th despite still studying at Oxford Brookes University. The next generation is already making an impact as last year’s junior Richard Hawes put in an excellent result to come 23rd during his first year at Brookes.

In the sculling trials, Rory Harris, son of masters rower Nick, is also in senior team contention, coming 8th overall.

Good luck to all of them as the International season progresses and they prepare for Olympic qualification for 2024
