The coed Walton Rowing Club Junior Crew program is committed to teaching the rewards of rowing and what it means to be a part of a crew. Aside from the fact that rowing is one of the best sports for building endurance and all-round physical conditioning, the benefits of the program are many. Our rowers come from all over Surrey and enjoy great team camaraderie in addition to dedication, hard work, and the "art" of rowing... and it is indeed an art. Undoubtedly rowing is physically and mentally demanding, but in addition our team maintains the highest standards of personal and athletic excellence. Walton Rowing Club takes and trains juniors from as young as ten up to sixteen. New junior members are assessed and given a training programme that suits them and their time. We do not over-stretch young people, but we do have a very active programme in racing competitively and winning. The main activity is on Saturday afternoons each week, but in addition to this there is ergo and supervised light weight work. Evening rowing takes place in the spring and summer. The Walton Rowing Club INTROW scheme has been created to cater for youngsters who want a introduction to the sport without having to pay full membership fees. A large fleet of boats is available for use, thanks to local sponsors. Coaching is provided by volunteers from within the Club, and we work hard at keeping a fairly low ratio of coaches to junior rowers. Safety and capsize training is a first step in learning how to row. Currently there are more than 100 juniors rowing at the Club, and enjoying the river and this exciting and beautiful sport. The oldest juniors start to row and train with the senior squad as soon as this is practical. Before long, they can find themselves in the company of Olympic and Henley winners, and get a real insight into what it takes! Contact
