SUBSCRIPTIONS 2010 due now!!! PDF Print E-mail

SUBSCRIPTIONS 2010

Annual Subscriptions are due on 1st January each year.

Due to the disruption being caused by the new building works annual subscription rates have been held at 2009 levels. However the Committee request that members make a voluntary donation of £25 towards the New Building Fund in lieu of the normal increase. Once the new building is operational, in view of the better facilities that we will be able to offer, it is the Committee’s recommendation that we increase the entry fee to £50 and boat rack fee to £150.

Subscription cheques should be made payable to 'Walton Rowing Club'. Please write '2010 Subs' on the back of your cheque. Subscriptions send by mail to the Club should be addressed to the 'Hon. Treasurer'.

If you wish to pay by internet banking transfer or set up a direct debit details of our bank account in the name of Walton Rowing Club are account number 02613662, sort code 60-22-25. Please reference the payment WRC subs and notify the Hon Treasurer, Grant McKenzie at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Members who pay by a Bank Standing Order are asked to ensure that they have revised their order for 2010. The order should be made out for a sum totalling the applicable subscription (e.g. a Full Member should pay £21.00 per month for 12 monthly payments = £252.00). The total sum paid must always equal your annual subscription.

Boat Rack Fees must always be paid in full at the start of the year by internet transfer or cheque, not by Standing Order. Please inform the Hon Treasurer.

David Hosking completes Atlantic Row PDF Print E-mail

If you haven't seen David for a couple of months, it's because he's been busy rowing across the Atlantic!  His Britannia III crew are the first boat in the Woodvale Atlantic Race to cross the finishing line in Barbados, 38 days after setting off from the Canary Islands.  They missed the current record for the crossing by a few days due to bad weather and adverse conditions.  However you can be sure that it will make David even more determined to have another go at it.  So if he asks you if you fancy going out for a row, think very carefully before you answer - he probably doesn't mean up to the canoe club and back!

Walton win National Coaching Team of the Year 2010 (PHOTO ADDED) PDF Print E-mail

Walton win National Coaching Team of the Year

Walton's coaching successes over the last year have been recognised with the award of British Rowing's Coaching Team of the Year.  The award committee noted that Walton not only consistently produces excellent junior scullers and rowers, many of whom go on the represent Great Britain, but also has made excellent progress in introducing more adult and veteran beginners to the sport and now has waiting lists for most of its squads.  Most of the coaching team will be attending the award presentation which is held at the Great Britain senior team trials finals at Dorney Lake.

Great Results at Hampton Junior Head PDF Print E-mail

Sam Knight and Angus Groom won the junior doubles title in impressive style, and then teamed up in a composite to come second in the quads.

Our next best result came from the youngest girls group who came second in WJ13 quads, less than a second behind the winners.

The older girls also did exceptionally well, with Holly Jones, Sam Ball, Hannah Traylen and Julia Clarke coming second in girls fours, and then teaming up with Sophie Walker, Naomi Allberry, Alice Correiea-Morton, Annie Withers and Joanna Fish to come 5th in the eights.

Our younger boys matched the girls with second place in J13 quads, and 8th in J14 octuples against a very strong field containing most of the top rowing schools.

NEW BOATHOUSE DEVELOPMENT HAS STARTED

Less than a week after we moved out, most of the old boathouse has been demolished, and work will shortly be starting on laying the foundations and slab for the new two-storey boathouse. Full rowing operations will continue as normal over the Winter, with all boats being stored outside in the compound, and all blades and other equipment in the sculling shed. Temporary changing rooms and a club-room have been installed behind the sculling shed.

Hampton Head and November roundup PDF Print E-mail

FANTASTIC FOUR OUT OF FIVE AT HAMPTON!

Hampton Junior Small Boats Head had a massive 820 entries on the start list, and many more were turned away as it was oversubscribed. Walton entered 13 crews, but only five could be accommodated in the race. However those five did us proud, winning 4 Gold Medals to be the most successful club there. Angus Groom won the Blue Riband event, Junior Singles, by 0.5 secs from a field of 65 scullers. He received the massive Hampton Shield for his victory. Sam Knight had an even bigger field of 80 scullers in J17, but convincingly beat them all with a very strong scull. Possibly our most impressive performance came from Holly Jones and Sam Ball, racing their J16 pair for only the second time. Their winning time also made them the fourth fastest women's pair overall, and beat half the J16 boys pairs too - definitely a crew to watch for the future. The WJ17 pair of Hannah Traylen and Julia Clarke had to recover from clashes with several slower pairs who would not get out of their way, but they still posted the winning time in their class to complete an amazing afternoon for Walton Juniors. Top clubs and schools like KCS, Emanuel, KGS, Marlow, Molesey, Monmouth, Borlase, St Pauls, Star Club, Thames, Tideway Scullers, Upper Thames, Westminster, didn't get a single Gold Medal and we got FOUR!!

FOURS HEAD AND GB JUNIOR TRIALS CANCELLED

High hopes of winning the Junior Quads title at the Fours Head were dashed when the event was cancelled after our crew had already boated and sculled up to the start. The very high winds also caused the cancellation of the first GB Junior 5km trial at Boston.

However, the Veteran Fours Head the next day, saw calm conditions and blue skies. The VetD quad of Mike Everington, Mike Bishop, Glyn Groom and Dave Clarke finished well up the field in 8th place overall, but just missed out on the VetD pennant by 4 seconds. Neil West, making a rare appearance in a coxed four, won the VetC pennant in a Walton/Crabtree composite. Ian Robinson won the VetD coxed fours, also with Crabtree.

GYM TRAINING AT HALLIFORD

Winter circuits have got off to a great start. Meeting every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm during term-time, there have been over 40 people for some sessions, despite chief slave-driver Nick desperately trying to think of ever-more ingenious ways to make people hobble and ache the next day! Everyone from 10 years to over-60's comes along, so if you want to have fun and get fit at the same time, come to Halliford School gym!

ergo champs 2009 PDF Print E-mail

OLI KNIGHT IS BRITISH INDOOR CHAMPION

In an incredibly close finish, Oli Knight hung on to win the J14 title at the British Indoor Rowing Champonships in Birmingham by 1m! The J14's have to achieve the most distance in 4 minutes, and Oli managed 1199m at an average split of 1.40 per 500m. Angus Groom came 4th in J18 with a time of 6.20, and Sam Knight was 13th in 6.42.

Teddington Sculls - Six wins PDF Print E-mail

Our 9 crews entered at Teddington on Sunday 8th November achieved 6 wins and 3 second places. The Junior quad of Matt Wade, Rupert Adams, Angus Groom and Sam Knight posted the fastest time in the First Division. The Veteran quad of Mike Everington, Neil West, Glyn Groom and Dave Clarke followed up by winning their class too. Adam Shire was the fastest single of the day, winning IM3. Andrew Cook and Oli Knight won Novice and J14 singles comfortably. In the afternoon division, the Veteran coxless four of Neil West, Chris Barrs, Ed Ball and Duncan Graham also won.

The girls crews did well too. In the WJ quad, Fiona Thiemann, Sam Ball, Annie Withers and Joanna Fish did a quick time, but were second to a very fast Oxford crew - this was Annie's first ever race and the future looks very bright for her. The girls four had to move up to Senior as there were no other juniors, and came second to Twickenham. Ali Douglass and Callum Gathercole also came a close second in J15 doubles

New building to go ahead PDF Print E-mail

After many years of discussion, and almost three years since we obtained Planning Permission, the committee agreed on 2nd November to proceed with the new boat-house project.

Image

At the very last minute, Surrey University decided to withdraw from the project, however Cranmore Prep and Charterhouse are participating, and we have strong sup-port and a substantial grant from British Rowing (from its block grant from Sport England).

The effect of Surrey’s withdrawal is that the project will be phased; at this stage we are committing to building a two-storey building. If we do not secure further funds very quickly, we will not fit out the upper floor but will instead use one of the boat-bays and the gym as a tem-porary clubhouse. This gives us about the same amount of space as today. When we secure the additional funds we will proceed with the first-floor fit-out.

Several members have committed loans to ensure that the first phase can proceed immediately, and we are in discussion with several potential participants and fun-ders to try to ensure that we can proceed directly to the second phase.

If any member, parent or friend of the Club is able to help in any way: with a donation, loan or a contribution in kind, please contact Mike Hendry or Neil West.

Silver Sculls 2009 - Eleven wins PDF Print E-mail

Walton had another good day at the Weybridge Silver Sculls with eleven category wins and many of our newcomers having their first taste of racing. The rising head wind made things tough for scullers in the last division and Angus Groom narrowly missed out on the overall fastest junior prize, but he had the compensation of winning J18 singles and the junior doubles with Sam Knight, their time being the fastest of the day overall. Neil West and Adam Shire were the fastest senior double winning IM2 and Richard Hosking and Paul Hone won VB doubles.

Holly Jones and Sam Ball were the fastest junior womens double winning J16, Sophie Walker and Hannah Traylen won J17 doubles Joanna Fish and and Naomi Alberry won J18 doubles. The girls J13 4X sculled strongly to win their event in their first race together.

Alastair Douglas and Callum Gathercole won J15 doubles and Laurence Fain and Harry Gaywood won J14 doubles. The boys J14 4X matched the girls winning their event against strong opposition.

Boston Marathon PDF Print E-mail

Walton set 3 new records at Boston Marathon

A squad of 21 Walton rowers took up the challenge to row 50km from Lincoln to Boston in this years Boston Marathon. The girls Junior four of Holly Jones, Sophie Walker, Hannah Traylen and Julia Clarke not only set a very impressive new record of 4hs 27mins, but they also beat the boys quad in the process, much to the embarrassment of Holly's elder brother! The mixed octuple of Adam Shire, Nick de Cata, Naomi Allberry, Charlotte Porter, Sam Ball, Brian Martin, Lydia Jackson, Nick Clarke and Alice Correira-Morton contained a complete cross-section of the club from junior girls to veteran men and relative novices to GB rowers. They pulled together brilliantly to smash the old mixed octo's record with a time of 3:40.

The senior quad of Neil West, Stuart West, Ollie Tomalin and Sam Lee-Gill also took 14 minutes off the IM1 quad record, beating most of the eights in the process, in a new best time of 3hrs 21mins.

Big thanks are due too to the support crew of Andrew Cook and Stewart Walker.

MAGNIFICENT EIGHT EVENTS WON AT BURWAY (Photos added) PDF Print E-mail

Walton's juniors and vets finished off one of the clubs most successful regatta seasons in style by taking eight event victories at Burway Regatta. The youngest crew of Lawrence Fain and Harry Gaywood got the ball rolling in J13 doubles with a very convincing win. Then the J14 quad of Josh Hyatt, Ali Douglass, Ben Thorne, Jonny Coates and cox Ross Jones were involved in a fantastic race where the boats were almost level down the course, with Walton finally coming through to beat Wallingford by 1 foot!

Ollie Tomalin ended his junior career on a high by winning the double sculls with Angus Groom, beating a very strong Tideway Scullers crew in the final. Angus' dad, Glyn was not to be outdone, winning the veteran doubles with Neil West.

ImageImage

Lydia Jackson also concluded her junior career in memorable fashion, winning the coxless pairs with Sarah Hunt, and then finishing off with a very hard-fought junior singles win too. Great news for Reading University, where both Ollie and Lydia are intending to go next!

The boys J16 quad of Alex Jones, Callum Beddow, Matt Wade and Rupert Adams put on a very impressive performance to convincingly beat Weybridge, and in our last event, Ollie Knight came back from behind to snatch victory in a very tough J14 singles event.

National Championships and beyond.... (Photos added) PDF Print E-mail

BOYS FOUR ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Alex Jones, Sam Knight, Liam Maloney and James Capel, rowing as a composite with St Georges College, won the gold medal in J16 coxless fours at the National Championships. The crew qualified fastest from the heats and then dominated the final, being more than two lengths clear of the field by 500m and holding a commanding lead through to the finish.
The girls J16 four of Catherine Bawtree, Kat Tviet, Julia Clarke, Joanna Fish, and cox Holly Jones did very well to qualify for the final and finish 5th overall

ImageImage

TWO GO TO JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nick Clarke performed brilliantly at final trials to win all his key seat races and get selected for the Junior Worlds team. He is scheduled to row in the coxless pair.
Walton Captain and Junior Coach, Nick De Cata has also been selected to go as coach to the girls quad. The Junior World Championships are at Brive in France from Aug 5-8th

SAM & MATT SELECTED FOR GB-FRANCE

Kingston Regatta PDF Print E-mail

Walton's juniors had an excellent day at Kingston regatta making five finals and winning 3 events with an overall performance that won the Victor Ludorum trophy for the second year in a row. Our J12 girls, Rebecca Traylen and Honor Liley, competing in their first regatta won a very impressive semi-final before losing to Maidenhead in a very good final. These girls have a very bright future as they continue to improve their technique and fitness. The boys then showed how much depth Walton has in double sculling as Lawrence Fain and Harry Gaywood won J13, and also Oli Knight and Jonny Coates won J14 too. These four, joined by Callum Gathercole, with Lawrence showing his all-round skills by switching to coxing, also made the J14 quads final, but their earlier exertions in the doubles meant they had to settle for a close second to Tiffin School.

ImageImage

The highlight of the regatta came in our final race, the J15 quads where the Walton crew have been coming agonisingly close to winning all year. Dan Patton, Dean Robson, Joe Taylor, Sam Young and cox Kieran Reals came all the way down the course neck and neck with Tiffin. The Walton supporters were shouting as loud as they could. We thought they'd just lost out again, but the judges finally announced that Walton had won, to a huge cheer of jubilation and relief from those on the bank!

Fantastic performances that fully deserved the Victor Ludorum trophy and a great credit to the boys and girls coaching co-ordinators Gordon Sandifer and Hazel Thiemann.

Walton and Weybridge Ladies Regattas PDF Print E-mail

Pictures from W&W Regatta are on Dave Williams website Click here to see.

and also in the gallery Click here to see.

Walton had a fantastic week-end at the local regattas recently. At Walton & Weybridge regatta many of our novices had their first taste of racing. The two Petes, Oscar and Andy made up a new mens novice four, while Jo, Claire, Petra and Sophie took to the water in the women's event.

ImageImage

Sido Jensma and Sean Hulley also made their sculling racing debuts with very respectable performances. There were some great wins for the club: Sam Knight won the J16 singles, and then teamed up with Matt Wade, Liam Maloney and Alex Jones to power away to an "easily" verdict over Windsor Boys in J16 quads. Windsor Boys got their revenge in J15 quads, but Walton won J13 with Mitchell, Atkinson, Keefe and Ollie Knight, coxed by Ross Jones; and also J12 quads with Ross Jones sculling this time, along with Alexi Buckingham, Luka Kebo, Manu and Honor Lilley coxing. There were also wins for Ollie Tomalin and Nick Clarke in IM3 doubles; Neil West and Andrew Cook in IM2 pairs, James Wedlake, John Davey, Ollie Tomalin and Dom Meyrick-Cole, coxed by Holly Jones in IM3 fours and Laurence Fain and Harry Gaywood in J13 doubles.

ImageImage

Not to be outdone, the girls entered Weybridge Ladies regatta the next day, determined to add to the tally of wins. They achieved it in style, with the girls J16 eight, racing as Novice, taking several lengths out of an experienced Twickenham eight in the final. The crew was Hannah Traylen, Sophie Walker, Naomi Allberry, Alice Correia-Morton, Holly Jones, Joanna Fish, Julia Clarke, Fiona Thiemann and cox, Amy Flavell. Fiona also won J17 singles and Julia teamed up with Sam Ball to win J16 doubles as well. Ollie Knight also entered the open J13 and J14 singles, winning both!

Thirteen wins overall in one of the clubs most successful week-ends with 64 individual club members entering at least one event! Walton's up-and-coming rowing dynasties made significant contributions with the Clarkes winning 3 events, and the Knights literally keeping up with the Jones' with 5 events each!

Marlow Spring 09 PDF Print E-mail

More photos added Walton had a great day at Marlow Sring Regatta winning seven events.

Ollie and Sam Kinight got the ball rolling in the morning winning J16 2x and Angus won Jun 1x. Nick Clarke followed them winning IM3 1x.

In the afternoon session Ollie won his second event of the day sculling very well to win a close race in J14 1x. Nick Clarke and Ollie Tomalin beat some good crews to win Jun 2x and the girls quad won two very close races to take WJ16 4x. The veteran D eight with the Captain on board more than doubled the handicap start on the Weybridge vet C eight and also beat Marlow in the process by a length to win their event.

The novice 4+ lost half a length at the start of the final but hung on gamely just failing to force their way through for a win. Adam Shire won his semi to make the final of novice 1x but lost narowly as did Neil in vet 1x.

Junior Inter-Regionals PDF Print E-mail
Fantastic results at Junior Inter-regional Championships (photos added)

Walton's younger rowers did us proud at last week-ends Junior Inter-regional Champs at Nottingham. For most of them it was their first experience of a proper 6-lane regatta and they all performed brilliantly with every crew making the A final.

Sam Ball and Holly Jones showed their incredible potential by winning the bronze medal in the J16 pairs, even though they are only 14 and 15! They then teamed up with Julia Clarke and Joanna Fish to go one better and get the silver medal in the fours, Joanna raising the rate to 42 to come from a length down in 3rd place to snatch silver in a photo finish! Very mature racing from all four girls, and a credit to their coach Andrew Cook who won a club-record 4 JIRR medals as an athlete, and now 2 more as a coach!

Girls snatch silver medal

Alex Jones, Sam Johnson (stepping in on the day for an injured James Burton), Matt Wade and Sam Knight rowed an excellent heat, and final to match the girls by getting the silver medal in the boys four too. Matt and Sam were denied a second medal, when very harshly disqualified for drifting out of their lane in a very fast J16 doubles final.

Boys receiving their medals

Sam Young, Dan Patton, Joe Taylor, Dean Robson, and cox Kieran Reals did very well in their first major regatta to make the J15 quad A final and finish a creditable 5th overall against very strong opposition.

Our youngest competitors Harry Gaywood, Ali Douglas, Ollie Knight, Callum Gathercole and cox Laurence Fain just missed out on the medals, with fourth place in the J14 quads. This bodes well for next year as several of them are still J13

Women’s Henley Regatta PDF Print E-mail

Richard Thiemann reports: Walton girls entered a four for the Groton Schools Challenge Cup at Women’s Henley. Despite a lack of race practice, they put up a good performance against the Australian schools’ cham-pions but were unable to match their pace. The whole crew will be eligible to compete in the event again next year and this year will have provided excellent experi-ence of top level racing.

The Club entered two quads in the Fawley Cup; the first was officially a composite Walton/Molesey crew al-though all were long-standing Walton members. It com-prised Sam Lee-Gill, Angus Groom, James Wedlake and Matt Tatlock; this crew was selected but suffered a crab and hit the booms in its first race.

Burns night supper PDF Print E-mail

On January 23rd Mike Hendry held a Burns night supper for about 20 of us. A large freshly-shot haggis was brought down from Scotland, along with some of Scotland's finest neeps, tatties and cullen skink. Men and women were both seen wearing kilts, and Robin came equipped with ginger wig and tam o'shanter. After the food, washed down with English Ales and Scotch Whisky, came the entertainment. Ian Robinson looked back to his previous life as a Gulf oil millionaire and read Ozymandias, several other poems were recited both humorous and thought-provoking, and our host gave an impressive recitation of The Cremation of Sam McGee by Robert Service. Amy Ellis played a snazzy Scottish reel or jig or something on the fiddle. She also won the prize for shortest kilt of the day, and we hope that this particular aspect of the evening will see more enthusiastic and daring competition next year - no, not you Robin.

Thanks to the Hendries and Linda Lee for doing the organising. A great evening was had by all and over £200 was raised for the new boathouse.

Plans for New Club House PDF Print E-mail

Latest Fund-raising status July 2008

Sometimes our success on the water obscures the fact that the Clubhouse is falling down and we urgently need better facilities, otherwise we will lose these successful and committed oarsmen and scullers.

The rebuilding fund currently stands at just over £30,000, with a number of pledges and likely donations that could take our internally raised funds up to around £40,000. We are adding to this reserve every month.

We are in discussion with the schools and University that use our facilities, and are also applying to various charita-ble funds that have helped us in the past. We can see realistic prospects that would take us over the £300,000 mark by the spring of 2009.

However the current estimated cost of knocking down the current boathouse and building a new one, as shown on previous newsletters, is around £425,000. So we still have a gap of over £100,000. If you know of any way in which we could close this gap, please contact Robert Jor-dan, Nick de Cata, Steve Trapmore or Mike Hendry.

To show that we are putting the effort in on the water, you can reward success by pledging £1 for every pot won by a Walton RC member in an open event (ARA or international, regatta or head). A form for this purpose can be downloaded here; after completion, forms should be returned to Mike Hendry or left behind the bar at the Club.
