 Phil spent his early sports career in the scrums at various rugby clubs, and has progressed smoothly from 'shut up and push' in the second row, to 'shut up and pull' in the middle of a boat. He has had a glittering rowing career, causing fear and anxiety among some of the less fit Veteran C competitors in the smaller rowing clubs. The highlight of his career so far was his demonstration, with another WRC committee member, of his front crawl to the umpires at Henley Veterans' Regatta in 2006 (Big Blade photography, Henley Vets 2006, race 14). He is proud of his armour-plated 'heavyweight' Aylings single, and it will be a sad moment when his new Filippi arrives this month, or next month, or the month after that.
