I joined Walton in 1973, and while Captain from 1976 – 78 built up the junior section, at a time when junior rowing was something that happened at public schools. As a member of the ARA Junior Rowing Committee, I was instrumental in setting up the ARA Proficiency Awards, which formed the basis for what is now the Wet Start programme. I was England Team Manager from 1977 to 1981, Selector from 1982 to 1991, and then Club President from 1995 to 1998. I still enjoys coaching junior scullers, preferably from a single, concentrating on watermanship and boat skills.
